Welcome to my web page. I use this to keep my students and parents informed on what we are working on in class. Certain assignments are due every week such as the reading journal. In addition, we will have a vocabulary test every week which consists of some of the critical vocabulary that we will see during the week in the reading passages or novels. This vocabulary will be updated on the website each week. I will frequently post links to web pages that we discuss in class, powerpoints that we use and other tools that will assist the student with the lessons we are working on.
Each student must read a minimum of 20 minutes at least 4 times a week (5 in some classes) and document it in journal form. (This will greatly affect their grade!) They should keep this in a separate journal or they may use their school agenda. There is an example on the board of what is expected. Every other week the students visit the library to get books but they may read anything that they desire as long as they document it, including blogs and news/stories on the web.
We also will work on beating the record for AR points this year. Each year the librarian has a party for every student that reaches 50 points each semester, I am planning on a special celebration for each and every class in which every student meets this 50 point requirement. Our first visit to the library we will work on the first points together. Ask your child often how many points they have; the best way to improve reading skills is to simply read.... every day.
One other thing.... If you scroll to the bottom of my page, you will see many links to tools and software that can help them outside of class, please feel free to use them.
If you ever have any questions, at any time, please email me at james.gallman@polk-fl.net.
