Southwest received another A grade for 2009. We are one of only 2 non-magnet middle schools in the county to so!
School is out for the summer. It was a great year with some fantastic students. I will fondly rememer every one. Remember to read this summer and have a great year in high school. If you are looking for something to read, I would suggest any other novel by S.E. Hinton. This was the author of "The Outsiders" that we read in class. A good one to start with is "Rumblefish". I will monitor my email almost every day so please feel free to email me and let me know how your summer is going or if you want some other ideas on what to read. My email is: james.gallman@polk-fl.net

If you are a student who is going to 8th grade next year at SWMS and you have my class, your reading class will look something like this:
Monday- Vocabulary review and reading comprehension.
Tuesday- Reading practice (can include worksheets, newspapers, magazine articles, textbooks, or a novel). We will practice skills like compare and contrast, main idea, reference and research, etc...
Wednesday- Homework due (1 paragraph review of a news article read on your own. In class we will share this and continue to work on skills.
Thursday- Reading journal is due for homework ( a minimum of 5 entries over the past week documenting reading 20 minutes a day of the material of your choice.) In class we will continue working on the skills from the prior days.
Friday- Vocabulary exam and once it is completed the remainder of the class is independent reading.
Also plan on reading a minimum of one AR book per quarter. I plan on having a reading contest. Please send me your ideas on what makes a good contest and what you think my students would really enjoy. The sky is the limit and I am willing to do almost anything for outstanding achievement! Some of you may have pictures from last year when I had to come to school in complete drag. (not a pretty picture but really funny!)
